Our Story
A journey of hope, dedication, and transformative impact
How It All Began
NATIONAL COUNCIL OF NEGRO WOMEN EAST PALO ALTO SECTION NCNW was born from witnessing ongoing discrimination and inequality in our community. Our founders recognized that preventing discrimination requires more than reaction—it demands proactive education, persistent advocacy, and comprehensive service. Inspired by the legacy of the National Council of Negro Women and recognizing local needs, a dedicated group of women, community leaders, and advocates came together with a shared vision of creating lasting change. They understood that fighting discrimination requires addressing root causes through knowledge, awareness, and community empowerment. What started as grassroots organizing has grown into a comprehensive section serving the East Palo Alto community and beyond. The founding members believed deeply that equality and inclusion are not just ideals but achievable realities when communities unite with purpose and determination.
Our early days were marked by passionate volunteers organizing community forums, hosting educational workshops, and advocating for those facing discrimination. We connected with local organizations, schools, and civic leaders to create awareness and drive meaningful change. The courage of those who shared their experiences with discrimination and the determination of allies who stood beside them fueled our mission to expand our reach. As awareness grew, more volunteers joined our cause, organizations partnered with us, and community members became advocates themselves. We learned valuable lessons about the complex nature of discrimination—from subtle bias to systemic barriers that affect housing, employment, education, and healthcare. These insights shaped our comprehensive programs focused on education, advocacy, and service. Meet our dedicated team who continues this important work today. As we reflect on our journey, we remain inspired by the vision that sparked our beginning: creating a community where equality and inclusion are lived realities for all.
